Completing the Instructional Analysis is a 3-step process

For steps 1 and 2

  • Follow the guidance of the provided cognitive prompts and type or paste in the relevant information.

If pasting content in:

  • Use the buttons in the Text Formatting group on the Learning Design Tool ribbon to maintain consistent formatting

  • Hover your cursor over a button to see what it does

  • Do not use Word’s formatting buttons

For step 3

  • Scroll down for detailed instructions.

Step 3: Add Learning Objectives

Click the Learning Hierarchy button on the Learning Design Tool ribbon to add your Learning Objectives

This will open the Learning Objective Hierarchy form.

Use this form to add your learning objectives.

  • This form is automated to save time

  • It provides cognitive prompts to help you form instructionally sound learning objectives

About the Learning Objective Hierarchy form

There are three parts to this form

  1. The top part builds out as you add and edit learning objectives. You will see your learning objectives listed here, as you add them. The LDT software uses this pane’s information to perform its functions.

  2. The second part of the form is the editing pane. This is your primary working area.

  3. The final part of the form is the area where instructions reside along with two feedback/message areas that are to the right of the logo.

Learning Objective Hierarchy form - annotated

The expectation is that you will add learning objectives in a logical order …

  • Starting with terminal objective 1.0

    • and listing the enabling objectives immediately below, numbered as 1.1 and 1.2 and so on.

  • Each objective will start with an Action Verb, which you will choose from the list provided.

    • The list of Action Verbs are based on the Domain you have selected.

The Action Verbs are associated with:

  • the Learning Level and Learning Type you select

  • which relate to the Domain you have selected.

How to Use the Learning Objective Hierarchy form

  1. In the Ref # box type in 1.0

  2. Under Objective Type make sure Terminal is selected

  3. Select your Domain

  4. Select your Learning Level

    • A Learning Type will be selected for you

  5. A list of Action Verbs will appear - Select one

  6. Your Action Verb is added to Learning Objective box next to the Ref #

    • Type in the rest of the learning objective statement

  7. Click Select and choose from the drop-down list to add measurement criteria - which will appear at the end of your learning objective statement

  8. Add any dependencies if needed

  9. Click Add

  10. See your learning objective in the top of the form

    1. Now notice that the Ref # has changed to 1.1

    2. And the Objective Type has changed to Enabling

    3. Leave the Domain as is

    4. Select a Learning Level

    5. Select an Action Verb

    6. See your Action Verb and complete the objective

    7. Add measurement criteria

    8. Add Dependencies

    9. Click Add

    10. See your enabling objective added below your terminal objective in the top of the form

    11. REPEAT THESE STEPS AS NEEDED - you do not have to write all of the objectives at once

  11. When done, click Done

Warning Messages

As you are adding an objective to the hierarchy, in the lower part of the the form - next to the Learning Design Tool logo - you may see warning messages about errors related to:

  • sequencing

  • action verb changes

  • levels not being compatible

  • and others.

Please pay attention to these messages and make any corrections as required.

  • The new or updated Learning Objectives Hierarchy list will not be placed into your Learning Design Document until all errors are resolved.
