Learning Domains

The Learning Design Tool includes three Learning Domains:

  • Knowledge

  • Skill

  • Attitude

All three domains are selected for use by default.

  • If a domain does not apply to the kind of instruction you are designing, then remove the check mark.

  • Mark the ones that you want to use.

Based on these settings, the Learning Design Tool software enables and disables learning domain options on certain dialogs that appear as you use the tool.

Default Domain

  • Choose the learning domain that will be your preferred domain.

Based on your selection:

  • When the Learning Objectives dialog opens

    • the Learning Levels and Learning Type settings associated with your default domain are pre-loaded.

Taxonomies

Three taxonomies are included, to companion the three Learning Domains.

  • Taxonomy of Knowledge

  • Taxonomy of Skill

  • Taxonomy of Attitude

TIP: Download the PDF below to see the Taxonomies.

Taxonomy of Knowledge

  • Choose between

    • Bloom’s Original

    • Bloom’s Revised

Bloom’s Original

In 1956 Dr. Benjamin Bloom published a framework for categorizing educational goals. We label this Bloom’s Original and you can select it for usage as your preference for Knowledge Domain designs you create. It contains these six categories:

  • Knowledge

  • Comprehension

  • Application

  • Analysis

  • Synthesis

  • Evaluation

Taxonomy of Skill

We have elected to use exclusively the skill taxonomy of Ravindra H. Dave who published this during the period of 1969 - 1975 because we feel it is more aligned with the education of adults.

There are two other models, one by Simpson and the other Harrow, and we remain open to comments/feedback about possibly offering these in the future. Contact us with your thoughts about adding these models.

Taxonomy of Attitude

To our knowledge there has been only one taxonomy of this domain published and it is by Dr. David Krathwohl. Published in 1964.

Bloom’s Revised

In 2001, a group of cognitive psychologists, researchers and other specialists published a revised version of Bloom's taxonomy. New descriptive labels where assigned and the top two levels adjusted. The categories in the Bloom’s Revised option are:

  • Remembering

  • Understanding

  • Applying

  • Analyzing

  • Evaluating

  • Creating

Learning Objective Usage

This preference setting controls whether or not the Learning Design Tool

  • records information on the Learning Objective reference numbers and to where they have been extracted, specifically into a new:

    • Word document

    • PowerPoint file

    • LeaderGuide Pro facilitator guide

    • IGST (Instructor Guide Scripting Tool) document.

Good to Know

With this setting enabled, the Learning Design Document can also:

  • Contain tracking information about the Source Documents created during the Analysis phase of the project

  • And from where summary content was imported into the Design document's Content Analysis section.

When a Course ID control reference is used on the Design Document, this Audit Trail tracking feature also tags with this same Course ID reference:

  • the Source Import documents

  • and the Extracted Course Design documents.

The Course ID reference is a Windows searchable keyword field.

  • Therefore, you can easily locate all electronic files associated with your various Learning Designs
