Frequently Asked Questions

If your LGPro tab has disappeared from Word

This probably means that the LeaderGuide Pro add-ins have become disabled.

If that has occurred, then there are two ways to get your LGPro tab back, depending on how the add-ins were disabled. Please follow the steps below, statring with the SOFT steps. If that doesn't help, then follow the HARD steps. If that doesn't work, please contact us at help [at] leaderguidepro [dot] com

However, if you are running Office 2010, before you follow the steps below, scroll to the bottom of this FAQ and follow those steps first.

SOFT: To re-enable add-ins that have been soft disabled by Word

  1. Open WORD & click on the File tab (Office 2010) or the Microsoft Office Button (Office 2007)
  2. Click the Options button

  4. In the Add-Ins details pane, locate the add-in(s) in the Inactive Application Add-ins list (you are looking for all of the bulleted items below)

  • MSO Style Analyzer
  1. In the Manage box, click COM Add-ins, and then click Go.
  2. In the COM Add-Ins dialog box, select the check boxes next to the disabled add-ins (LeaderGuide Pro, GeoDoc, MSO Analyzer)
  3. Click OK

  2. Select the add-in(s) (LeaderGuide Pro, GeoDoc, MSO Analyzer) and click Enable
  3. Click Close

If your george! tab is missing in PowerPoint, repeat the steps above, in PowerPoint, looking only for the george for PowerPoint add-in.

And if your Librarian tab is missing in Excel, repeat the steps above, in Excel, looking only for the Librarian add-in.

Why did this Happen?

This can happen when you force a close while in the midst of a LeaderGuide Pro action. Or, your LGPro tab can be disabled right after you use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to get out of a frozen document. In this case, when you re-open Word, you may see a message asking you if you want to disable LeaderGuide Pro because "it caused a serious problem". You should say "NO" to this. If you don't say "No", or if you miss this message, Office will go ahead and disable LeaderGuide Pro, causing the tab to disappear.

OFFICE 2010 Users

  • Open Word & click on the File tab
  • Click on Options & click on Customize Ribbon
  • In the dialog box that comes up, look to the right, under Main Tabs
  • Do you see LGPro Plus (or Solo) listed?
  • If yes, is it checked? If not, check it & click OK & you'll now see your LGPro ribbon again
  • If you don't see LGPro Plus (or Solo) listed, then follow the steps above

Hardware: You must have a Mac with an Intel-based dual processor

Software: The same as PC Software Requirements listed above

To run LeaderGuide Pro™ on a Mac you will need to: Install and run Microsoft Office and LeaderGuide Pro™ on the Microsoft Windows side of your system, either at native speed using Boot Camp or under a parallel operating system partition using a third party product such as Fusion or Parallels.

If you are an Office 2007 user with a 64-bit Operating System:

Please check your computer's Control Panel> Programs and Features to see if Microsoft VSTO 2010 Runtime (x64) is installed.

If you do not see this program listed, please execute the link below to add this prerequisite software to your computer BEFORE installing any of the LeaderGuide Pro version 9 software.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=158918

The link will immediately launch the download, which you must run before running our setup for the Office 2007 edition of LeaderGuide Pro.

Use Word's Save function, because LeaderGuide Pro documents are Word documents. Save them just like any other Word document.

On the Word Home tab - click on the Paragraph Mark button

When you print a LeaderGuide Pro document it will print without all of the weird characters and symbols you see when you are working in the file. And, if you go into Print Preview mode you will see how your document will look when it prints.

What are seeing are Word's non-printing characters. This is because LeaderGuide Pro turns your Paragraph Marks on, and as a result, you also see all of the other non-printing characters, like page breaks, spaces, end of row symbols, tab spacers, and those little gray brackets associated with fields and bookmarks. These non-printing characters all relate to the formatting of the document.

You will find that they are very helpful while you are working in your document. They help you know precisely where your cursor is. And when they are turned on, you can clearly see things like extra spaces, etc.

They are important when formatting is important - like in your leader guides. You can turn them off by clicking on the Paragraph Mark button on the Word Home tab, but we do not recommend that while you are working in your leader guide.

You must enable Macros in order for LeaderGuide Pro™ to function properly.

How to set your Macros

Open a Word document and Click on:

  • The File or Office button in the top left corner of your screen
  • Word Options
  • Trust Center
  • Trust Center Settings
  • Macro Settings
  • "Disable all macros with notification"
  • OK

Use the LGPro "Paste Special" button to do the Pasting for you.

  • From your source, copy the content you want
  • In your leader guide, place your cursor where you want to paste
  • Click on the LGPro Paste Special button

The content will take on the LGPro style characteristics associated with the spot where you added the content.

You can control/change this by using the LGPro Text formatting buttons - with blue bars in them. Use to apply any of the following:

  • LGP Title
  • LGP Text
  • LGP Bullet 1
  • LGP Bullet 2
  • LGP Bullet 3

Training At A Glance is disabled

This will be the case if you selected EXPRESS when setting up your leaderguide.

If you are receiving this message and you didn't select Express, then follow these steps:

  • Save your work & Close your document
  • Save & close any other Word documents that may also be open
  • Close out of Word - if you are on a Mac, also close out of your Windows application
  • Open Word and open your LGPro document through LeaderGuide Pro™
  • Click on Update All Fields and then your TAG button and you will be all set

Why does this happen?

This is one of those computer/Microsoft mysteries. It has something to do with multiple documents being open and how Office then interprets Macros, etc. Sorry for such a technical explanation :)

  • Assessments, Cases and Handouts can be built in a Leader Guide and extracted into a Participant Guide - or as stand-alone documents.
  • To extract into a Participant Guide
  1. Mark those blocks for extract once you are in the Extract LG to PW dialog box, along with any other blocks you want to include in your PG when you are ready to run the extract
  2. After you run the extract remember to remove the answers in your PG (if you had typed the answers into the leader guide)
  • To extract Assessments, Cases and Handouts as stand-alone documents
  1. When you are ready to extract them from your leader guide
  2. On the LGPro ribbon, click on Special
  3. Under the Special Extracts heading, click on Assessments, Cases and Handouts
  4. This will bring up a dialog box where you can choose what you want to extract
  5. You will end up with stand-alone Word files for the things you choose to extract
  6. Remember to Save the extract content!

  • When you are ready to run the extract from your leader guide to your participant guide
  • And before you bring up the Extract LG to PW dialog box
  • Go through your leader guide and one-by-one
  1. Highlight a screen shot or any other content that is not in an LGPro Block but that you want in your participant guide
  2. On the LGPro ribbon, click on Special/Bracketed Area Extract
  3. This will insert some weird looking markers onto your leader guide page – leave them in place – they will be removed by LGPro once you run the extract to the Participant Guide
  4. Repeat as needed for each screen shot and other free-standing content
  5. Once everything is selected, bring up the Extract LG to PW dialog box and run the extract

The Participant Workbook block will sync with a leader guide to update your leader guide with references to your participant workbook page numbers, based on the pages where Participant Workbook blocks sit after extraction from a leader guide.

The Participant Workbook block is the only LGPro block that has this feature.

So, at each point in a leader guide where you want to reference the participant workbook, drop in a Participant Workbook block.

And then, depending on the nature of the participant book content that will be on that page:

  • either put the content right into the block
  • or type in a brief reference to the content
  • and then your participant book content can follow right below, either in some other type of block or as an independent item that is on the page outside of a block.

When you are ready to do an extract from a leader guide to a participant guide, include the Participant Workbook blocks in your extract.

Then, use the LGPro Special/Sync feature to transfer Participant Guide page number references to the Participant Workbook blocks in your leader guide.

You can also use this feature to update content in the Participant Workbook blocks in your leader guide.

What do you need to build?

  • Just leader guides? - Then choose LeaderGuide Pro™ Solo
  • Just participant guides? - Then choose ParticipantGuide Pro™ Solo
  • Just e-leader guides? - Then choose E-LeaderGuide Pro™ Solo
  • Just simple session handouts from PowerPoint? - Then choose george! Solo
  • Just simple speaker notes to companion a slide driven session? - Then choose george! Solo
  • Just manipulate images & slides in Word files that I otherwise decide how to format? - Then choose zAPPs-apps
  • I need it all! - Then choose LeaderGuide Pro™ Plus

To do this, it's best to create a custom style within your leader guide template.

  • See our instruction set: How to Add a New Style
  • Find it in the Text & Table Formating Instruction Sets

Keep in mind that multiple numbered lists can cause trouble in Word documents. So, be careful and do each numbered list properly.

Here is a link to a helpful article about working with numbered lists generally:  http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/NumberAlignment2007.htm

How to Add a New LGPro Text Style

  • Start a new leader guide or e-leader guide or participant guide, depending on which document template you want to add a new style to
  • Open the Word Styles list box
  • Click on the New Styles button in the lower left corner of the Styles dialog box
  • In the “Create New Style from Formatting” dialog box that comes up:
  • Enter a “Name” for your new style
  • Accept the default “Style type” of Paragraph
  • Select your “Style based on” - For a new type text, base on  "LGP Text"
  • Select your “Style for following paragraph” - probably you want to select "LGP Text"
  • Use Formatting to adjust the appearance of your new style to Italics - and make any other format changes if desired
  • Make your new style available to you in all new LGPro docs going forward

Quick Steps to Apply your New Style

  • Type in your text
  • Highlight it
  • Click on your new style from Word’s Quick Styles or from Word’s Style list box

For more detailed guidance, there is an instruction set for this:

Quick Steps to Add a New Table of Contents Style

  • Start a new leader guide or e-leader guide or participant guide, depending on which document template you want to add a new style to
  • Open the Word Styles list box
  • Click on the New Styles button in the lower left corner of the Styles dialog box
  • In the “Create New Style from Formatting” dialog box that comes up:
  • Enter a “Name” for your new style
  • Accept the default “Style type” of Paragraph
  • Select your “Style based on” - For a Table of Contents entry that lines up right under your Lesson, use as "Heading 2"
  • Select your “Style for following paragraph”
  • Use Formatting to adjust the appearance of your new style if desired
  • Make your new style available to you in all new LGPro docs going forward

Quick Steps to Apply your New Style

  • Type in your text
  • Highlight it
  • Click on your new style from Word’s Quick Styles or from Word’s Style list box

For more detailed guidance, there is an instruction set for this:

Place your cursor i the block that needs to flow over to the next page and click the flow button.

After clicking on the Flow Block button, as a block continues over to a new page the text flows over, but the icon does not repeat.

If you would like the icon:

  • Place your cursor in the flowing block
  • Add a new block of the same type from the LGPro ribbon
  • Copy out the over flowing text from the prior block
  • Paste it into the new block
  • Place your cursor in the offending block
  • Click on the Flow Block button on  the LGPro ribbon.
  • It looks like a sideways “S” or a snake.

This works in every block, except that it cannot “flow” an image across pages. An image must sit all on one page.

Once you add a Projected Image (slide) block, be careful how you move or remove it should the need arise.

Any time that you remove (cut) a Projected Image block from a leader guide, e-leader guide or a participant workbook:

  • then you must click on the UPDATE ALL FIELDS button to let LeaderGuide Pro™ re-number the remaining Projected Image blocks (slides) in your document.

Do not manually change the slide numbers

  • Manually changing the slide numbers messes up the LGPro code and cancels out the ability to do Replace & extract of slides

To “recover” from this error

  1. Place your cursor in the LGPro block directly above/before the spot where the Projected Image block belongs & add a new Projected Image block
  2. Then, move your mouse/cursor way out to the left of “the offending block” (the one you messed with), highlight it & cut it (using Word’s cut function) to remove it
  3. Now, UPDATE ALL FIELDS & then  use the LGPro/Special… slide functionality you need

If you have LeaderGuide Pro™ installed on your computer and you have allowed the February 2012 Microsoft Office Update to run, then you may experience a problem starting a new LeaderGuide Pro™ document.

The problem may occur if you open Word and start a new leader guide or participant workbook or e-leader guide when no other existing, previously saved Word document is open.

This is because the February 2012 Microsoft Office Update has inadvertently affected 3rd party software like LeaderGuide Pro™ - which is an add-in to Microsoft Office.

To address the problem the February 2012 Microsoft Office Update causes for LeaderGuide Pro™ users, Great Circle Learning has issued new software setup files for all of our LeaderGuide Pro™ version 9 Office 2010 and Office 2007 edition software products.

Please note that running our new setup file will only correct the issues that the Microsoft Update caused in our software. If you find that the Microsoft Update has affected other 3rd party software you have on your system then please contact the software provider – and we suggest that you also inform Microsoft.

If you currently have any of the LeaderGuide Pro™ version 9.01 software products installed and registered on your computer, you do not have to remove the software or deactivate your existing license key. Simply run the new setup file and follow the prompts. With that said, please do keep in mind that to run the setup file full System Administrator privilege is required.

We understand that you may find this confusing. Feel free to contact us at help [at] leaderguidepro [dot] com if you have questions about the information we are providing, or if you need assistance determining which version of the LeaderGuide Pro™ software you are running, or how to download a new setup file.

ONE person - BEGIN Here

  • In Windows Explorer, go to My Documents and cut or copy your “LeaderGuide Pro Master Library” folder (don’t change its name)
  • Go to the drive where you want your master library to reside and paste it in
  • Make a note of the file path & share it with your colleagues

NOTE: Don’t change the name of the LGPro folder, keep it as “LeaderGuide Pro Master Library”

Next… EVERYONE

  • Open Word (with everything else closed & no Word docs open) & click on the LGPro tab
  • Click on the little arrow next to More & in the drop down list, click on Change Library Location
  • A dialog box will come up
  • Next to “LeaderGuide Pro Master Library” click on Point
  • Browse/navigate to the new location of your Master Library
  • Click on the Master Library Folder so it is highlighted
  • Click OK – you should see it in the white box in the dialog box
  • Click on Set & then click on Done

Next - Important

  • In Windows Explorer, go back to My Documents\LeaderGuide Pro Master Library and either delete this duplicate copy of the master library folder or re-name to something like “OLD… “ or “COPY OF ….”

This takes longer to read than it does to actually do!

If you get unexpected results when you do an extract…

It is most likely because someone pasted one type of Block icon (graphic) over another. To check this:

  • In the file you are extracting from, go to the Block that didn't extract and place your cursor in it
  • Now, insert that same Block from the LGPro ribbon - it will appear directly below your existing Block
  • Now, place your cursor in the graphic area of the NEW Block and check the Style (and perhaps write it down)
  • Now place your cursor in the graphic area of the Block that didn’t extract and check the style - does the style match the style of the clean block you just inserted?
  • Probably not. So, leaving cursor in the graphic area of the Block that didn’t extract when it should have, find the style it should be and apply it
  • Cut out the extra Block you added
  • Update All Fields and Save; and then run the extract again

Extracts are based on the Block styles. You pick visually, but LGPro extracts based on code. So if you have pasted different icons over the original block icons you will not get what you expect.

NOTE: You can customize the Block icons, and then you don't have to paste icons over each other, and you'll get what you expect when you extract.

Open Word. Click on the LGPro tab. Click on the About button.

If you don't see an LGPro tab in Word, open LeaderGuide Pro™ from the red Pro icon on your desktop. Click on the red Pro About button.

Apple Mac computers & LeaderGuide Pro™

You cannot run Great Circle Learning software natively in Office for the Mac products because our software will not run under any of the Apple Operating Systems.

If you want to run Great Circle Learning software on a Mac, then you must first install on your Mac either VMware Fusion or Parallels. Both of these products will create a virtual machine (Partition) on your Mac so that you can run Microsoft Windows applications, like Great Circle Learning software.

So, to set up a virtual Windows-based system on an APPLE Mac computer, you need to purchase and install the following additional software:

  1. First you must install either VMware Fusion or Parallels to create a virtual machine on your Mac.
  2. Next you must install into your virtual machine a Microsoft Windows Operating System, so choose either Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP with service pack 3.
  3. Then Microsoft Office 2010 for Windows must be installed into the Windows virtual machine.
  4. Once all of the above is in place you can load LeaderGuide Pro™ into the Windows virtual machine.
  5. And you must meet all of the Install and Run requirements that apply to a PC

Imagine a continuum ranging from simple to sophisticated...

Documents created using george! are at the simple end of the continuum, and LeaderGuide Pro documents are at the sophisticated end.

george! publishes attractive Word documents from your PowerPoint files, in 64 diffrrent styles. george! documents include a cover page, table of contents, slides, notes, and note capture space.

LeaderGuide Pro™ builds Word documents structured and formatted as leader guides and participant guides.

Any time you want to move a whole block over to the next page

  • Place your cursor in the Block you want to move
  • Click on the Continue button on the LeaderGuide Pro™ ribbon

This action:

  1. moves the block and everything that comes after it to the top of the next page
  2. adds a page break in between
  3. carries over the Lesson Name as “Lesson Name, continued”

No. We have the red text set as “Hidden Text” so that you can see it on the screen, but it doesn’t print.

If you are seeing the red text in printed documents, then there is a setting in Word that you need to adjust on your computer. Your system is set to “Print hidden text” even though normally this is something you wouldn’t want. So, to fix this, assuming you do not normally need to print hidden text, follow these simple steps:

  • Open Word
  • Click on File in the upper left corner of your screen
  • In the screen that comes up, click on Options, in the column on the left, under File
  • In the screen that comes up, click on Display
  • In the screen that comes up, look to the right - under Printing options and UN-check “Print hidden text”
  • Then, in the lower right corner of the screen, click OK and then close out of this area

You can test this adjustment by printing the last page of a leader guide or the TAG (Training At A Glance) page. You now shouldn’t see any red text.

And, if in the future you do need to print hidden text for some reason, just follow these steps and CHECK the “Print hidden text” option.
